i98FM’s Illawarra Convoy has been a much-anticipated community event on the Illawarra calendar since it’s inception in 2005. Last year’s Convoy which was held on Sunday, November 19, raised an astounding total of $1,805,306 for The Illawarra Community Foundation & Camp Quality Illawarra.
The event which celebrated its 12th year in 2016 saw 720 trucks and over 1020 Bikes travel a distance of 70 kilometers from Illawarra Coal’s West Cliff Colliery at Appin, through the streets of the Illawarra, to finish up at the Croome Road Sporting Complex in Albion Park Rail.
The i98FM Illawarra Convoy is open to all Truckies and Motorbike enthusiasts who register to take part for a $30 donation. The preceding Thursday, the opportunity to take the coveted position as the lead truck in the Convoy was fought out live to air with Marty and Fairlie. Winning top spot with a bid of $300,000 was ‘The Dandaloo Boys’.
The Peoples Truck also contributed $215,000 to the cause, along with MJ Rowles’ $131,000 and Illawarra Truck Repairs and Spares’ $102,000. The lead truck total for 2015 was $1,184,384. In addition, the auction to lead the motorbikes in the Convoy was carried out with the winning bid of $67,277.30 by The Kembla Caltex Lead Bike Team followed by Carr Brothers Motorcycles at $24,650.
The lead bike total for 2015 was $91,927.30. From the lead truck and bike bids alone, a total of $1,276,311.30 had been raised before an engine had even started. The total funds raised by Convoy 2016 was an amazing $1,805,306.
In 11 years, the Illawarra has generously donated a total of $9,521,666 to the Illawarra Convoy.
